Contract bids, 1836-1848.

Bids were submitted by firms and individuals competing for construction contracts awarded by Illinois and Michigan Canal Commissioners and Trustees. Each bid includes firm or individual name; section or structure being bid on; itemized work proposal; material and labor costs; and bid submission date. The bids relate to costs for all aspects of construction including excavating, mucking, grubbing and cleaning, masonry, puddling; and materials to be used (e.g., timber and planks; cement; gravel; stone) and pertain to all types of structures including bridges; locks; dams; waste weirs; protection walls; culverts; lock houses; and enbankments.
